Seasons of Change
Reflections on the River
Scripture
“The river teaches us that change is not an interruption to life, but part of the wisdom of the Creator.”
By late summer, the river begins to speak in a different voice. The mornings are cooler. Shadows stretch farther across the water. Cottonwood leaves show the first hints of gold, and the bright urgency of midsummer slowly gives way to a quieter rhythm.
An angler who has visited the same stream throughout the year can feel the change before fully seeing it. The hatches are different. The water temperature shifts. Trout begin to hold in new places. What worked a few weeks ago may no longer be the best approach. The river has not become less faithful; it has simply entered another season.
Our lives move through seasons as well. Some are bright and full of visible growth. Others are marked by letting go, waiting, or learning to walk at a slower pace. We often welcome seasons of increase but resist seasons of transition. Yet Scripture reminds us that there is “a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”
Change can feel unsettling because it reminds us how little we control. We cannot hold summer in place. We cannot keep the river at the same flow, the trees in the same color, or life in the same arrangement. But the One who governs the seasons is not surprised by their turning.
Autumn does not mean the end of beauty. In many ways, it reveals a deeper beauty. The river grows quieter. The colors become richer. The urgency fades, and what remains invites reflection. God often uses changing seasons to mature our faith, loosen our grip, and teach us to trust His timing more deeply.
When life begins to shift, we may be tempted to look back with longing or forward with anxiety. But faith invites us to receive the present season as a place where God is still at work. He is Lord of spring growth, summer abundance, autumn surrender, and winter stillness.
The next time you notice the first signs of autumn along the riverbank, pause and give thanks. The changing season is not a loss of God’s faithfulness. It is another expression of it.
Reflection
- What season of life do you sense God leading you through right now?
- Where are you resisting change instead of trusting God within it?
- How might this season be forming patience, wisdom, or deeper dependence in you?
Naturalist's Note
As days shorten and temperatures cool, trout behavior often changes. Insects hatch at different times, water temperatures shift, and fish may move to new holding water. Successful anglers learn to observe seasonal changes rather than assuming yesterday’s pattern will still work today.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for being faithful in every season. Help me receive change with trust instead of fear. Teach me to recognize Your hand in times of transition, and shape my heart to follow You wherever this season leads. Amen.
On the Water This Week
Visit a familiar stretch of water and look for three signs that the season is changing. As you notice them, ask God to help you see where He is at work in the changing circumstances of your own life.
